I am motivated as much by teaching as I am by research. My educational philosophy is grounded in interdisciplinary and experiential learning. I
like to evaluate students through a variety of methods, and I place a large emphasis on individual and group learning outside the lecture hall
environment (e.g. take-home problem sets, laboratory assignments, individual and group projects, oral presentations, field trips). I believe that
this approach provides a more rounded learning experience for students, and ultimately, better prepares them for their future careers.
A Continued Commitment to Teaching
My commitment to education is demonstrated in my 15 years of teaching experience, and my continued involvement in university education since receiving my Ph.D in 2002. While my teaching experience comes from lecturing at four universities and colleges, it mostly comes from teaching in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University, where I have taught thirteen Geomatics and Geography courses since 2002.
My teaching experience is diverse. I have taught technically-oriented subjects (e.g. GIS, remote sensing) and subjects of a more general nature (e.g. Earth Systems, Environmental Science). I have also taught at all University levels (1st - 4th year Undergraduate; Graduate). These courses include:
My diversity of teaching assignments has allowed me to develop strong teaching approaches for both science and social science-oriented courses, and provided
me with the wide range of skills necessary for effective teaching in a wide range of academic disciplines.
Undergraduate and Graduate Thesis Supervision
I have served as an external examiner on a number of MSc and PhD committees in the Department of Geography at Carleton University.
As an adjunct faculty member of DGES, I have also served as a supervisor for various practicum placements at Agriculture Canada,
and as an advisor / co-supervisor for Undergraduate, Masters and Doctoral thesis projects (see my
Publications page for more details).
